What is a Chamber of Commerce?

The Chamber of Commerce
is a not-for-profit association established to further the interests of businesses in the community. Funded by membership investments, the Chamber is not affiliated with town government, nor is it accountable to any other organization. A Chamber works for a healthy economic climate of good jobs, capital creation and honest, efficient government.

A Chamber's strength lies in the number and diversity of its membership. Because a Chamber collectively embodies the vast exposure of the many businesses and professionals in its membership, it has the knowledge and insight to identify issues of importance to the business community and the combined means to devise and implement strategies to address them.

What does a Chamber of Commerce do?

A Chamber of Commerce represents
the interests of its membership, in a spirit of cooperation with the plan and philosophy of economic development set forth by the community. The programs of the Chamber are designed to positively address those community factors which affect economic development: local government, transportation, education, environment, culture, health care services, employment, etc. In addition, the Chamber may seek to act or make recommendations in response to problems or conditions that threaten the economic well-being of the area it serves.

The Chamber of Commerce represents business and professional interests before elected bodies. Ordinances, legislation, and regulations affecting business and the economic climate are addressed by Chambers on the local, state, and national level.

The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce

The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce
in Manchester, CT has been working since 1901 to ensure the prosperity and well-being of the greater Manchester area. The goal of the Chamber, stated in broad terms, is to make the Town of Manchester an even better place in which to live, work, and do business.

The Chamber is an organization of approximately 600 businesses, professionals, and individuals who make an investment of both time and money to help the Chamber meet its goals. Operating under the leadership of a Chairman and 25-member Board, and with the assistance of a full-time professional staff, the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce provides numerous ongoing services to its members and the community.

As the organized arm of the area's business community, the GMCC provides liaison and lobbying efforts to benefit the area and the promotional efforts to stimulate the local business economy. The Chamber enables business and professional people to accomplish collectively what no one could, or would, individually. It gives business leaders a voice in civic affairs and government as well as opportunities for promotional exposures.

The Chamber of Commerce is also the front door to the community.
For businesses, individuals, and families it is the place to begin the process of learning about their new environment, its pleasures, necessities, and opportunities. A sincere invitation is extended to both newcomers and long-time area residents who are seeking information or involvement. We suggest you look for the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce logo when seeking products or services, or visiting area merchants. By supporting Chamber members you will not only ensure yourself of fair business dealings, but you'll also be supporting your community's future.
